The 1990s have long been looked at as a pivotal time for skateboarding. It was a uniquely transformative time, unlikely to ever be repeated. It was the decade when skaters took control of the industry and skateboarding finally broke free of the “West Coast.” Fueled by the birth and subsequent explosion of street skating; skateboarders in cities and towns across the country were building robust and diverse local skate industries. With the help of a new generation of freelance videographers and photographers that roamed the country, skaters in far flung places were beginning to steal some of the spotlight. Skate shops
and skate parks became the hub of the local scene; creating a unified image for each city.
